My Favorite Book of 2019

December 30, 2019

The best book I’ve read this year is Creative Calling, by Chase Jarvis (photographer, and founder of Creative Live). I’ve been following Chase for about nine years now. I almost didn’t read this book because I figured being a photographer, you know, I was already doing creative things—so what would I gain from reading? I decided to read it only because it was written by Chase.

I was wrong though. This book was amazing. Life-changing, actually. The book has interesting ideas on how to move along your creative journey, but that’s not why it’s good. Chase totally rewires your thinking about creativity. After reading this, I had a refreshingly new perspective on creativity.

All of us are creative as kids, but unfortunately, we learn to become uncreative as we grow older. Chase gives a good example: when you ask first graders if anybody wants to draw on the board, all hands would go up. Ask the same question to high schoolers—only a few hands would go up. Chase finds a way to put you back in touch with your child-like creativity, and how to harness it for life and business.

The idea that only some of us are born creative isn’t right. It’s just that some of us believe we are not creative. If you’re one of them, get this book.
